What you need
- A Windows PC or Mac with current updates
- A modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox)
- An HDMI or USB-C to HDMI cable if you want to use the TV as the screen
- The email and password for each streaming account you already have
- Optional: an external drive with your own movie and photo files
Step by step
- Update the computer and browser. Install the latest Windows Update or macOS update, and update your browser. Many streaming services limit picture quality on outdated browsers.
- Choose app or browser. Some services offer a Windows or Mac app; others work best in a browser. Bookmark each service and sign in with your own account.
- Connect to the TV. Connect HDMI. On Windows, press Windows key + P and choose Duplicate or Second screen only. On a Mac, open System Settings → Displays and choose mirroring or extended display.
- Send the sound to the TV. On Windows, choose the TV as the output in the sound icon on the taskbar. On a Mac, choose it in Control Center → Sound.
- Stop the computer sleeping mid-film. Adjust power settings so the screen does not turn off during playback while plugged in.
- Optional: run a media server. Install Plex Media Server or Jellyfin on the computer, point it at the folders that hold your own files, and install the matching app on your TV devices.
Specialist tip
For a media server, a computer that stays on and wired to the router gives a much smoother experience than a laptop on Wi-Fi.
Troubleshooting
Video stutters on the TV
Close other heavy apps, plug the laptop into power and use a wired network connection if possible.
The TV shows the wrong resolution
Set the display resolution manually to the TV’s native resolution in display settings.
No sound through the TV
Re-select the TV as the audio output after connecting the cable, and check the TV is not muted on its own input.
