What you need
- The device, its power adapter and an HDMI cable
- Your Wi-Fi name and password (or an Ethernet connection)
- The email and password for each streaming account you already have
- A phone or computer nearby for sign-in codes
- An Amazon account to register the device
Step by step
- Connect it properly. Plug the stick into an HDMI port on the TV — use the HDMI extender if the port is cramped — and power it from the supplied wall adapter rather than a TV USB port, which often cannot supply enough power.
- Pair the remote and join Wi-Fi. Turn the TV to the right input, insert the batteries and follow the on-screen setup. Choose your 5 GHz network if you see one; it is usually faster and less crowded.
- Update before anything else. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates, install everything offered and let the device restart. Many early app problems disappear after this step.
- Install your apps. Use Find or the Appstore to install the streaming apps you already subscribe to. Remove pre-installed apps you will never use so the home screen stays tidy.
- Sign in with your own accounts. Open each app and sign in, either on the TV or by entering the code shown on screen at the provider’s website. Set up profiles for each family member.
- Tune picture and sound. In Settings → Display & Sounds, leave resolution and dynamic range on Auto unless you have a reason to change them. Set Audio to the right output for your soundbar, and turn on HDMI CEC so one remote controls the TV volume.
Specialist tip
Turn off the TV’s own motion smoothing for films and series and use a Movie or Filmmaker picture mode — it makes a bigger difference than any Fire TV setting.
Troubleshooting
The remote stopped responding
Replace the batteries, then hold the Home button for 10 seconds next to the stick to pair it again.
Apps buffer or look blurry
Check Settings → Network for signal strength. If it is weak, the stick may be hidden behind the TV; the HDMI extender or a small Ethernet adapter usually fixes it.
Black screen or “no signal”
Try a different HDMI port, make sure the power adapter is the original, and unplug the stick for 30 seconds before trying again.
