What you need
- The device, its power adapter and an HDMI cable
- Your Wi-Fi name and password (or an Ethernet connection)
- The email and password for each streaming account you already have
- A phone or computer nearby for sign-in codes
- A free Roku account
Step by step
- Connect and power. Plug the Roku into HDMI and power. On sticks, use the supplied adapter; low power from a TV USB port causes random restarts.
- Join Wi-Fi and update. Follow the on-screen setup to join your network. The Roku downloads updates automatically; you can also check in Settings → System → System update.
- Activate with your Roku account. Activation is free — you only sign in to your own Roku account at roku.com/link. Roku never charges an activation fee; ignore any website or phone number that asks for one.
- Add your streaming apps. Add the apps you subscribe to from the Streaming Store, then sign in to each with your own account.
- Set display and audio. In Settings → Display type, choose Auto detect. Under Audio, pick the right mode for your soundbar or receiver, and turn on HDMI-CEC under System → Control other devices.
- Organize the home screen. Move the most-used apps to the top row and remove what you do not use.
Specialist tip
Turn on “Auto-adjust display refresh rate” if your TV supports it; it makes films look smoother without adding motion smoothing.
Troubleshooting
The remote does not work
Replace the batteries. Voice and point-anywhere remotes have a pairing button in the battery compartment — hold it for five seconds.
“Not enough bandwidth” messages
Check Settings → Network → Check connection. Move the router into the open or try the 5 GHz band.
Roku keeps restarting
Use the original power adapter and cable, and make sure the device is not overheating behind the TV.
