What you need
- The device, its power adapter and an HDMI cable
- Your Wi-Fi name and password (or an Ethernet connection)
- The email and password for each streaming account you already have
- A phone or computer nearby for sign-in codes
- Your Apple ID, and an iPhone or iPad nearby for quick setup
Step by step
- Connect and start setup. Connect the Apple TV to HDMI and power. When the setup screen appears, hold your unlocked iPhone next to it to transfer your Wi-Fi and Apple ID settings automatically.
- Update tvOS. Go to Settings → System → Software Updates and install anything available. Turn on automatic updates.
- Install your apps. Download the streaming apps you subscribe to from the App Store and sign in with your own accounts. Turn on One Home Screen if you want every Apple TV in the house to match.
- Set up users. Add household members under Settings → Users and Accounts so each person gets their own recommendations and profiles.
- Tune video and audio. Under Video and Audio, turn on Match Content (dynamic range and frame rate). Choose the right audio output, and run the color balance test with your iPhone if offered.
- Set up AirPlay from iPhone and iPad. Make sure the iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi. Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring or the AirPlay icon in a supported app, and pick the Apple TV.
Specialist tip
Set the Apple TV to use the TV remote’s volume over HDMI-CEC — one remote for everything is what most households really want.
Troubleshooting
AirPlay does not see the Apple TV
Check both devices are on the same network, restart the Wi-Fi router, and check Settings → AirPlay and HomeKit on the Apple TV.
The Siri Remote is unresponsive
Charge it with the cable, then hold the Back (or Menu) and Volume Up buttons for five seconds near the Apple TV to pair it.
Picture looks too dark or flickers when starting a show
Turn on Match Content so the TV switches modes only when the content requires it.
